Visiting Artist Workshop with Ali Saunders: A Creative Journey into Surface Decoration

This past weekend, Baltimore Clayworks had the privilege of hosting the immensely talented Ali Saunders for a two-day workshop, Guide to Surface Decoration. As a new Long-Term Resident Artist at Baltimore Clayworks, Ali brought her expertise and vibrant style to share with participants eager to expand their ceramic knowledge.

Throughout the workshop, participants immersed themselves in a wide range of surface decoration techniques. From carving and sgraffito to wax resist and paper stencils, Ali demonstrated how these methods could transform even the simplest clay forms into unique and expressive works of art. Her enthusiasm for color, pattern, and composition was infectious, as attendees explored new possibilities in their own creative practice.

One of the standout elements of the workshop was Ali’s focus on layering techniques. By combining carving, slip transfer, and water etching, students were able to develop rich, dynamic surfaces, giving their work a multi-dimensional quality. These hands-on experiences not only allowed participants to learn new skills but also sparked conversations about composition, design, and the many ways to manipulate space within a ceramic form.

Beyond the technical skills, Ali’s workshop created a space for personal growth and exploration. Students were encouraged to push their boundaries, experiment with new ideas, and embrace their own creative process. As one participant, Sheri, noted, “Ali’s class was amazing. I learned so many techniques that I can immediately use in my work.”

Another participant, Ellen, shared, “Ali opened my eyes to various ways to enhance my pots, especially since I am not much of a drawer. Some of the techniques are simple while others are more complex. All of them are useful and really get the mind thinking of so many other possibilities.”

In addition to the workshop, Ali also hosted a Virtual Artist Talk earlier in the month, giving insight into her artistic journey and inspirations. Her love for pattern, the legacy of female makers in her family, and her connection to nature all play pivotal roles in her work, and she generously shared these personal influences with our community.

We’re thrilled to welcome Ali Saunders to Baltimore Clayworks and can’t wait to see how she continues to inspire and engage our community. For those who missed the workshop, there will be more opportunities to learn from Ali in the future. Stay tuned for upcoming events and workshops at Baltimore Clayworks!

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this workshop a success!
