Visiting Artist Workshop with Aisha Harrison: “The Human Bust”

November 8 @ 10:00 am November 9 @ 5:00 pm

Aisha Harrison will be full of stories to share during her 2-day workshop focused on techniques used to create her figurative sculptures!  Aisha is a clay sculptor with a style that captures emotion and complexity.

Students will learn how to model a ½ scale wall hanging human bust with lifelike features. First, you will create a general wall hanging bust form, including the head and beginning of shoulders. Participants will practice making specific features individually off the bust, including mouths, noses, eyes, and ears.  Third, you will get a more specifc face shape and practice making the features on the bust. Finally, Aisha will address hair, as well as some ideas for how to make clothing for the shoulder area.

Students will build solid and then begin to hollow them out at the end of the class. Students will likely need to finish hollowing after the class is finished. Aisha will also talk about potential surface treatments that could be applied after the bust is hollow in the green stage, or after firing. You will need reference materials for the human face. Students should bring their own photographs, photocopies, or books with photographs of people’s faces. No experience necessary. Clay, plywood, eye tool, and handouts will be provided. Bring your own clay tools and take part in this fun hands-on workshop!

There will be a break for lunch both days.  Feel free to bring your own lunch or visit one of the many restaurants within walking distance.

If you are curious about Aisha Harrison’s workshop but haven’t decided whether or not to sign up you may consider attending her artist talk.  This will take place on Tuesday, October 21 from 12:30-1:30pm.
