Artists are at the center of the mission of Baltimore Clayworks, and provide the organization with talent and innovation to inspire our community and to enliven the artistic impact of ceramics in our region. Their professional and personal networks provide a kaleidoscope of interactions with peers, galleries, and academic institutions, which keep the organization at the forefront of contemporary ceramic art.
Artist Bio
Born in Montreal, Canada, Martina Lantin received her MFA from NSCAD University. She has participated in residencies internationally including the Baltimore Clayworks, the Zentrum für Keramik in Berlin and the Liling Ceramic Museum in China. Most recently Martina with the Inaugural Artist in Residence at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. Her work has been included in numerous juried and invitational exhibitions internationally. Dedicated to the power of the functional form, Martina mines the history of ornament and pattern to explore the mutation and boundaries of functional ceramics through vessels and installations. Martina is an Associate Professor at the Alberta University of the Arts.
“Pottery simultaneously serves as container and carrier of cultural information and manifests the dual roles of concrete utility and abstract symbolism. Drawing on these multiple functions, I seek objects of future nostalgia by making work that is a reverberation of the past.”
