Shared Offerings is about the parallels in relationships between objects and people. The show will feature objects exhibited in sets, pairs, and groupings that suggest connection and invite the viewer to observe familial links. The patterns on the vessels are representations of the exchange between mother and child and the ways images can be holders of emotion, conversation, and legacy.
About the Artist
Ali Saunders is a ceramic artist from Boerne, Texas who makes functional pottery using pattern and color. She received her Bachelors of Arts from the University of St. Thomas and her Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University. After graduating from the University of St. Thomas she was a resident at Flower City Arts Center in Rochester, New York. Most recently, she has been the Salad Days Resident at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts where she made 450 plates to be a part of the Salad Days event in July 2023. Saunders is inspired by the growth and abundance in nature and makes work that connects to legacy of female makers in her family.
Artists Statement
I make ceramic vessels that are functional and visually appealing. I enjoy the idea of crafting an object that has the potential to be equally pleasant in use or viewed sitting on a shelf. This duality, of function and appearance, is highly intriguing to me. The objects I produce function well, but my commitment to the surface makes these objects more compelling. It is in the surface that a part of me is revealed and it is in the surface I hope the user finds solace and comfort.
