Opening Reception: Saturday, September 6, 2025, 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Baltimore Clayworks proudly presents On The Surface, an exhibition curated by alumna Shalya Marsh (‘11), highlighting five contemporary ceramic artists who explore the richness and complexity of surface embellishment. Each artist featured in this exhibition pushes the boundaries of surface design through distinct approaches ranging from intricate patterning and layered texture to innovative glazing techniques and material experimentation. This is the second exhibition of the year showcasing the artists who emphasize various surface embellishments.
Together, these artists reveal how surface treatment is more than decoration – it is a language of its own, conveying conceptual depth, cultural narratives, and material curiosity. On The Surface invites viewers to look closer and consider how embellishment can transform form, elevate function, and deepen meaning.
