Description

Advanced Wheel Throwing and Sgraffito Design Technique

Larry Allen makes a wide range of both functional forms meant for everyday use and larger decorative vessel related forms meant for display. His pottery is wheel-thrown using black stoneware clay with decorative techniques including sgraffito, multiple glaze stages and firings.

Each piece is coated with slip. When the slip has stiffened the surface is covered with a wax coating. This allows Sgraffito, the carving of designs into the clay.  The vessels are bisque fired; then the interior is glazed and the exterior is given highlights with a low fire red glaze. Each piece gets one more final firing.

The inspiration for Allen’s designs comes largely from Native American and African art.

DESCRIPTION:

DAY 1  –  CLAY WORKSHOP

I will be demonstrating the throwing of more complex forms during the morning session such as: bottles, round shapes and tri-pod vessels.  During the afternoon session I will assist participants with throwing forms of their own.

DAY 2  –  CLAY WORKSHOP

I will decorate the pieces that were thrown during the morning session of the first day.  I will carve a Sgraffito design on each vessel and talk about my inspiration for the design work.  During the afternoon session I will aid each workshop individual with designing their piece that he or she made during the first day of the workshop.

TOOLS:  the regular pottery tools and a Sgraffito tool.

Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24 from 10:00-5:00 pm.

There will be a break for lunch both days.

Fee: $210 member/$225 non-member

If you are curious about Larry Allen’s workshop but haven’t decided whether or not to sign up you may consider attending his Artist Talk. This will take place on Tuesday, October 29th from 12:30-1:30pm.

Larry  Allen is an accomplished pottery artist whose works are increasingly sought after by collectors in the Southeast and throughout the country.  His stoneware-clay vessels are inspired largely by Native American and African art, and are authentic, beautiful and functional.  He was introduced to the world of pottery as a student at Berea College in Berea, KY, in the late 70’s where he served as an apprentice potter for three years and earned a bachelor’s degree in art.  He taught pottery classes at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, AL for four years before opening his own studio known as L A Pottery in 2006.
