Visiting Artist Workshop with Lars Westby: “Mold Making as a Multi/Use Tool”

September 20 @ 10:00 am September 21 @ 5:00 pm

Join us for a workshop with Lars Westby! Lars explores form and surface to create playful utilitarian objects. It is not often that we have plaster demonstrations here at Baltimore Clayworks. Lars will create functional pieces and complex sculptures from simple press molds and share the surface treatments that bring them to life.

In this demonstration only workshop Lars will reveal how to create plaster molds from original forms created by the artist to random found objects that he collects. The technique of pouring thick molds and plastering thin shell molds will be shown. He will demonstrate how these molds can be pressed to make simple functional pieces such as platters and how numerous molded shapes can be combined to create larger more complex forms. A variety of his molds will be brought in to show the diversity of mold designs. Discussions will also include the use of other materials to enable the creation of large scale forms which defy conventional approaches to how ceramics are displayed. This will include the use of threaded rods, JB Weld epoxy paste, fiberglass cloth, resin and other materials. He will show how these materials are utilized to bring larger pieces together as seen in his own sculptures.

In the second day of the workshop Lars will talk about surface treatments and how they bring forms to life to complete the final artwork. He will share a number of his glaze recipes of crusty, crawling, orange peel glazes and glazes that pull away from themselves to create a shiny and matt surface all in one. He will also show how to use wax resist with stickers and stencils to create bold patterns.

There will be a break for lunch both days.  Feel free to bring your own lunch or visit one of the many restaurants within walking distance.

If you are curious about Lars Westby’s workshop but haven’t decided whether or not to sign up you may consider attending his artist talk.  This will take place on Tuesday, August 26 from 12:30-1:30pm.
