This showcase is from a new partnership between the National Association of Asian American Professionals Baltimore Chapter (NAAAP Baltimore) and Baltimore Clayworks. Through my involvement with both groups, I saw a desire for craft spaces as a place to bond over a shared identity. Inspired by monthly Crafternoon sessions with NAAAP Baltimore, I put together the CLAYsian Initiative: a series of free hand building workshops for Asian Americans.
As one participant described the impact of the program, “Coming to Claysians every week has helped a lot. I started with this block of goop and I turned it into something cool that holds shape.” By putting our hands in clay, we found an escape from daily stressors, allowing us to be present in the moment and “be together.” Coming from all different levels of experience with clay, we shared what we knew with the group. With every week, our collective skill set grew, empowering us to imagine what we can “build together” next time.
This partnership was made possible with support from the MICA Community Engagement Grant.
The National Association of Asian American Professionals is a non-profit organization that cultivates and empowers Asian & Pacific Islander leaders through leadership development, professional networking, and community service.
Our chapter’s approach:
Be Together.
We form supportive and trusting relationships among AAPIs to strengthen our sense of belonging.
Build Together.
We promote bold, vulnerable, and AAPI-driven dialogue and learning to elevate our best selves.
Better Together.
We collaborate with partners to understand, amplify, and tackle challenges facing AAPIs and marginalized communities.
