Volunteering

Share the joy of clay by volunteering at Baltimore Clayworks. Individuals and groups are fired up to lend their time and talents in meaningful ways.

Volunteer and clay it forward

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Baltimore Clayworks.

To make your experience positive for all, please keep the following in mind:

Baltimore Clayworks’ vision is a welcoming and creative community where all people can access and experience joy through clay.
Our core values are artist-centeredness, excellence, inclusivity, integrity, and joy.

Baltimore Clayworks is committed to providing access for all folks to the best of our ability

We regularly offer individual volunteer positions and are thrilled to customize opportunities for businesses and groups.

No, we appreciate any time that our volunteers can offer. Some of our opportunities are recurrent and others are one-time events.

Our opportunities vary. We will review safety protocols as needed for each project.

We request volunteers to be at least 15 years of age to work alone. (In some cases, activities are for at least 18/21 years of age only). There may be opportunities for children under the age of 15 to work alongside an adult.

No, there are many ways a volunteer can contribute to Baltimore Clayworks that do not require previous experience in clay.

There is a large parking lot on the side of the gallery building which has one accessible parking spot and is payable by app. All proceeds from that lot benefit Baltimore Clayworks’ annual operating costs. There is also paid street parking on both sides of Smith Avenue, with one accessible space on the left at the end of Smith Avenue. On Greely Road, there is one free accessible parking space. Parking starts at 50¢ an hour.

Yes, we are happy to certify service hours for students. Please bring the relevant forms from your school.

Yes, we offer 3-4 meet and greet trainings each year that may include a tour of the campus and facilities for individuals that are new to our community.

For most volunteer opportunities, please wear closed-toed shoes and casual clothing. If you are in the studios or working on the grounds and facilities, wear clothing that can be laundered.

Volunteer Areas

Baltimore Clayworks relies on volunteers across all of our program areas. Learn more about each volunteer role by expanding the personas below.

Administration keeps the wheels turning. Duties can vary from document archival, organization, detailing auction items, and more. This is a great chance to learn how a non-profit organization works behind-the-scenes.

Our Board members are the passionate and invested champions who shape our artistic future by guiding smart decisions, promoting our mission, and ensuring we have everything  needed to keep our kilns firing and our community thriving. Ready to get your hands dirty (metaphorically speaking) and help sculpt the future of Baltimore’s premier clay institution? Complete this form to start creating something amazing together!

Our Community Arts program breaks down barriers and makes art accessible to everyone. At schools, senior centers, or community events, as a volunteer, you’ll pack art kits, transport materials, or reach out to those who might never otherwise experience the joy of working with clay.

We always need volunteers to pull off a smooth event. Duties can include ticket retrieval, set up and clean up, wrapping ceramics at checkout, and more.

Help maintain and improve our facilities and grounds.  Opportunities include things such as organizing, yard work, and painting.

Volunteering in our facilities keeps Baltimore Clayworks a clean and safe environment. Each session involves a deep cleaning of the studios including clay traps, wiping down shelving, and more. Plus, you’ll get an insider’s view of how a working ceramics studio operates. Duties can vary depending on facility needs but are great for folks looking for satisfying, hands-on opportunities.
