This school year, students at Cross Country Elementary Middle School #247 embarked on a colorful journey of creativity and collaboration through the arts. In partnership with Baltimore Clayworks, our community came together to create a stunning 5 x 5 foot mosaic clay mural titled “Together We are Stronger.”
This project was more than just an art lesson, it was a celebration of voices, experiences, and collective identity. From brainstorming to the final product, every step reminded us that when we work together, we can build something extraordinary.
The mural’s design is inspired by the color wheel, blending vibrant hues to symbolize the uniqueness each student brings to our community. Middle school students contributed puzzle tiles imprinted with short phrases and slang that capture the spirit of our generation. Elementary students created clay cartoon tiles representing favorite characters, hobbies, and pop culture icons that make them smile.
Together, these pieces form a larger picture – a visual reminder that while we each have our own stories, we are part of something bigger.
Learning the Art of Mosaic
Throughout the project, students discovered the meticulous craft of mosaic-making. Ms. Kai Ning Castro, Visual Arts Teacher, MAT, Cross Country Elementary Middle School #247 shares that under the guidance of teaching artist, Vandelyn Simmons, and with the generous support of Baltimore Clayworks’ Director of Community Arts and Engagement, Stephen Calldender, “students learned about the process of creating a mosaic mural, such as assembling, backbuttering, grouting, and polishing. We celebrate the arts because it gives us hands-on collaborative experiences while visualizing our creative ideas.”
These hands-on lessons not only taught important artistic techniques but also built teamwork, patience, and a sense of accomplishment.
Art has the power to connect us, spark our imaginations, and help us see each other in new ways. This mural project exemplified all of these values. It provided a space where students of all ages could share ideas, learn new skills, and create something meaningful side by side.
We are so proud of our students for their creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm. This mural is now a lasting testament to what can happen when we come together with open minds and caring hearts.
