Baltimore Clayworks is thrilled to congratulate longtime artist, mentor, and Technician and Facilities Manager Samuel Wallace on receiving the prestigious 2025 Maryland Traditions Heritage Award from the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC). This distinguished honor recognizes Wallace’s dedication to maintaining and innovating Jamaican pottery traditions for over 30 years, as well as his impact on students and ceramic artists across Maryland and beyond.
Sam is among six recipients of this year’s Heritage Awards, which celebrate outstanding individuals, places, and traditions that enrich Maryland’s cultural fabric. As a master ceramicist, Sam has played a vital role in preserving and evolving the Jamaican coil pottery technique. His work not only bridges Maryland and Jamaica’s artistic heritage but also fosters a vibrant exchange of knowledge and craftsmanship between the two regions.
Through his decades of work, Sam has mentored countless students, inspiring them to explore the deep-rooted traditions of Jamaican pottery while encouraging innovation in contemporary ceramics. His influence extends far beyond the studio as his teachings, artistry, and cultural contributions have strengthened Maryland’s artistic landscape, ensuring that traditional techniques remain relevant for future generations.
