On November 23 and 24, 2024, Baltimore Clayworks had the privilege of hosting a dynamic and enriching Visiting Artist Workshop led by the renowned ceramic artist Larry Allen. Over the two-day event, participants were immersed in the artistry and technical expertise behind advanced wheel-throwing techniques and the intricate beauty of sgraffito design.
Larry Allen, celebrated for his striking black stoneware pottery and designs inspired by Native American and African art, shared his wealth of knowledge with attendees of all skill levels. The workshop offered a perfect blend of demonstration, hands-on practice, and personal guidance, leaving participants not only with finished pieces but also with an appreciation for the artistry and cultural influences that define Allen’s work.
The first day began with Larry Allen demonstrating advanced wheel-throwing techniques. Participants eagerly took to their wheels in the afternoon, guided by Allen’s personalized advice to push their skills further. The studio buzzed with creativity as attendees shaped their own unique forms, inspired by Allen’s work and encouragement.
Day two brought a focus on decoration, where Larry showcased the intricate process of sgraffito. With each vessel coated in slip and wax, Allen meticulously carved his designs, discussing the cultural influences that inspire his motifs. Participants then had the opportunity to bring their own creative visions to life, carving designs into their vessels under Allen’s mentorship. The workshop concluded with a shared sense of accomplishment as attendees admired their pieces and the techniques they had learned.
For many, the workshop was a transformative experience, blending skill development with cultural appreciation.
