Workshop Dates: April 26 – 27, 2025
Baltimore Clayworks was thrilled to welcome ceramic sculptor Kelsey Bowen for a two-day immersive workshop titled Building Narrative. The weekend workshop sparked inspiration, storytelling, and hands-on creativity for participants of all skill levels.
From the moment Kelsey stepped into our studio, it was clear that this would be no ordinary workshop. Her approach to sculpture, both imaginative and deeply personal, captivated attendees. With the whimsical energy of a children’s storybook and the emotional depth of lived experience, her demonstrations brought clay to life in surprising ways.

Over the course of the weekend, participants were guided through Kelsey’s signature techniques for creating expressive, figurative sculptures. She began with hollow coil-built forms and showed how to gently coax gesture and character into the clay. As arms, legs, hands, and objects began to emerge, Kelsey emphasized how even the subtlest decisions can begin to tell a story.
Throughout each day, Kelsey generously invited questions and encouraged participants to try out what they’d learned through focused hands-on studies. Whether forming a delicately expressive hand, experimenting with textures, or playing with fabric-like clay drapery, each person had the opportunity to bring their own narrative into the work.
