On September 20–21, Baltimore Clayworks welcomed artist and educator Lars Westby for a two-day workshop, Mold Making as a Multi/Use Tool. The event offered a rare opportunity for participants to engage with plaster in real time.
Throughout the weekend, Lars guided participants through his inventive process of transforming original forms and found objects into versatile plaster molds. He demonstrated how these molds could be used to create both simple functional pieces, such as platters, and complex, sculptural forms by combining multiple molded elements. From thick-poured molds to thin shell casts, attendees gained insight into the full range of mold-making possibilities.
In addition to plaster work, Lars shared his experimental approach to mixed media incorporating materials like threaded rods, epoxy, fiberglass, and resin to expand the potential of ceramic display and construction. On the second day, the focus shifted toward surface treatments and finishing techniques. Participants explored how glaze, texture, and pattern bring clay to life, as Lars revealed several of his signature glaze recipes and demonstrated the use of wax resist, stickers, and stencils to create dynamic surfaces.

Rebecca Morton, Director of Artist and Studio Programs, shared her reflections on the weekend:
“Lars Westby’s workshop was a great learning experience because he was so transparent, showing every step of his process. Since Baltimore Clayworks does not have a designated plaster area, this workshop was unique in that it provided participants with an opportunity to watch live plaster-pouring demonstrations. Many participants left saying they now felt confident in trying to work more with plaster. In just two days, Lars shared multiple building techniques, created scoring tools with the participants that they could take home, demonstrated surface techniques, and shared numerous glaze recipes.”
The workshop fostered an atmosphere of curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration – values that lie at the heart of Baltimore Clayworks’ mission. For many attendees, this was their first opportunity to see how plaster can expand ceramic practice beyond traditional boundaries.
Lars’ generosity in sharing his techniques, tools, and personal insights made the weekend a meaningful experience for everyone involved. We are grateful to have welcomed him back to Baltimore Clayworks, where his journey as a former resident artist has come full circle.
