SUMMARY:Community Arts Spring Showcase: Medical Detectives
DESCRIPTION:View the Exhibition Publication here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Community Arts Spring Showcase honors the creativity\, perspectives\, and shared stories of our vibrant community. This season’s showcase also highlights an exciting partnership with Pimlico Elementary/Middle School and Sinai Hospital through an arts integration collaboration with a group of 7th graders participating in the Pimlico Medical Detectives Program. \n\n\n\nThe Medical Detectives Program at Pimlico Elementary/Middle School is a specialized STEM initiative for grades 6–8 developed in partnership with LifeBridge Health and Sinai Hospital. Using the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum\, students engage in hands-on medical simulations\, from measuring vital signs to diagnosing infectious diseases. A cornerstone of the program is a visit to the Sinai Hospital Simulation Center\, where students practice clinical skills on advanced medical mannequins under the guidance of healthcare professionals. The experience culminates in an annual white coat pinning ceremony\, symbolizing students’ growing commitment to careers in health and science. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nContemporary Porcelain: from Tradition to Innovation\n\n\n\nContemporary Porcelain: From Tradition to Innovation explores the enduring legacy of porcelain while showcasing the bold ways artists are redefining this historic material today. \n\n\n\nElements of Mechanisms\n\n\n\nElements of Mechanisms examines the intersection of form\, function\, and movement through works that draw inspiration from mechanical systems and engineered structures.

SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Workshop: Hand Turned Ceramics with Paul Briggs
DESCRIPTION:Register for the Visiting Artist Workshop here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHand Turned Ceramics is an intermediate 2-day immersion into pinch-forming vessels. In this workshop participants will learn to move clay in a fashion similar to how it is pulled up on the wheel by using only their hands. Primarily\, much patience will be needed to learn this technique and experience with pinch-forming and/or other clay experience is needed. Hand turned ceramics will take students beyond the usual 3″ pinch-formed pot as participants will learn to pinch up to 5lbs of clay\, growing a pot from one ball of clay without adding or subtracting any material. Functional ware will be prioritized. \n\n\n\nTools to bring: \n\n\n\nAny throwing or handbuilding tools that you like and are accustomed to using will be helpful to bring for the workshop. Clay will be provided. \n\n\n\nThere will be a break for lunch both days.  Feel free to bring your own lunch or visit one of the many restaurants within walking distance.    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\n\n\n\nPaul Briggs was born in Beacon\, NY and grew up in the Hudson Valley area of New York state. He was one of those kids who doodled all the time\, enrolled in various art classes and began working with clay as a 9th grader. Ceramics quickly became the one place where his attention was not disturbed. His affinity for pinch-forming clay developed while the art director of a summer camp in Bushkill\, PA. His thinking about art objects as material shapes with meaning began as an undergraduate at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Over his circuitous life journey Paul has studied and taught education\, ceramics\, and theology\, earning his PhD at the Pennsylvania State University and his MFA at the Massachusetts College of Art\, Boston\, MA. \n\n\n\nPaul works primarily with pinch-forming and slab building processes and overall his work is about art making as inner development\, broadly understood. He creates distinctive\, high relief pinch-formed ceramic vessels and penetrating slab-built sculptural forms\, both genres often have interior space. Paul is an Assistant Professor of Ceramic Art at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

SUMMARY:Shino Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Juried by Matthew Hyleck\n\n\n\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, September 12\, 2026\, 4:00 – 6:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApply to this juried exhibition here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBaltimore Clayworks is pleased to present Shino Odyssey\, a juried exhibition celebrating the depth and diversity of Shino glazes. This exhibition invites artists to explore and showcase the vast possibilities of this glaze family known for its remarkable sensitivity to clay body\, application\, kiln atmosphere\, and firing duration. \n\n\n\nAbout the Juror\n\n\n\n\nMatthew Hyleck received a BFA from Xavier University in 1997. He is currently an associate artist and instructor at Baltimore Clayworks whose outstanding functional pottery has earned recognition by the Maryland State Arts Council IAA in Craft in 2018\, 2011\, 2007 and 2005 and has received recognition within the field of ceramics. His studio work was featured on the December 2011 Ceramics Monthly cover article. Additionally he has completed visiting artist-residencies at Tainan National University for the Arts\, Taiwan R.O.C.\, Ohio University’s Woodfire Symposium and Watershed Craft Center’s artists invite artists residency. He serves as the education coordinator for Baltimore Clayworks Mt. Washington campus\, a position he has held since October 2000. He maintains an active home studio in the Beverly Hills neighborhood of Baltimore City  \n\n\n\n\nJuror’s Statement\n\n\n\nI have worked with Shino glazes now for nearly 25 years – nearly half my lifetime and the entirety of my potting career – and still find the Shino glaze family provides a complex visual and textural breadth. These glazes remain highly sensitive to clay body\, application\, kiln atmosphere\, and duration of the firing which in turn allows for tremendous diversity with a touch of serendipity.  \n\n\n\nTraditional Japanese Shino glaze (16 th Century) contains a high concentration of feldspar which\, when fired\, produces a thick semi-transparent white glaze. with a semi-gloss surface when fired to approximately 1200°C. Contemporary American Shino glazes – while they have evolved over the last 50 years – remain rooted in this basic chemical formulation with feldspar\, soda ash and kaolin remaining central components of the glaze.  \n\n\n\nShino glazes are best detailed by their warm earthtone hues of cream and peach. They are at times temperamental\, ethereal\, sumptuous and tantalizing – a distillation and embodiment of our daily life\, experience and relationships.   \n\n\n\nI owe my potting career to those pioneering American potters who have informed my journey with Shino (such as Malcolm Davis and Warren MacKenzie)\, who have tested and re-tested\, fired and failed only to persevere in their pursuit of this glaze Shino and it’s myriad possibilities. This exhibit seeks to explore Shino works  that best illustrate the depth\, range\, and variations possible with Shino glazes.   \n\n\n\nMatt Hyleck \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nSolo Exhibition by Ali Saunders\n\n\n\nMore information coming soon! \n\n\n\nNew Kids On The Block 2026\n\n\n\nIncoming Fellowship and Resident Artist Showcase \n\n\n\nOktoberfest\n\n\n\nBeer Stein and Wine Goblet Invitational \n\n\n\nCommunity Arts Fall Showcase\n\n\n\nCelebrate the creativity of our community at the Community Arts Fall Showcase

DESCRIPTION:Tune into the Baltimore Clayworks Artist Talk series to learn more about our artists and the work they create!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for the Virtual Artist Talk here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for the Visiting Artist Workshop with Stacy Snyder here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCeramic artists are at the heart of Baltimore Clayworks. Artists are at the center of the mission of Baltimore Clayworks\, and provide the organization with talent and innovation to inspire our community and to enliven the artistic impact of ceramics in our region. Their professional and personal networks provide a kaleidoscope of interactions with peers\, galleries\, and academic institutions\, which keep the organization at the forefront of contemporary ceramic art. \n\n\n\nArtist Bio \n\n\n\nStacy Snyder grew up in the mountains in southwest Virginia and now lives and works as a full-time studio potter in Arlington\, Virginia\, just a few miles from Washington\, D.C. \n\n\n\nStacy received a BFA in Ceramics and Photography from Indiana University in 1994 then spent a year as a special student at the Kansas City Art Institute. In 1998 she received an MFA in Ceramics from The Pennsylvania State University. She has participated in residencies at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center and spent time working at the Fundacio Josep Llorens Artigas outside of Barcelona\, Spain. \n\n\n\nHer work is inspired by what she loves: the rooflines and aerial images of and glimpses of humanity that take my breath away when watching bike races\, the photographs of Bernd and Hilla Becher which are straight forward images of utilitarian structures\, the color and composition of the landscape paintings by Egon Schiele and Richard Diebenkorn\, the simple yet complex layering of Rosanjin’s work\, and the way a weathering barn sits nestled in a mountain.

SUMMARY:Fire Fest 2026
DESCRIPTION:Fire\, both seductive and wild\, is essential in creating ceramic wares. Join the Baltimore Clayworks community for the unexpected during our expedition of firing techniques from around the world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets – Coming Soon!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Information\n\n\n\nWatch live demonstrations! Experience Raku kiln firings\, with origins tracing back to China and Japan\, and an Obvara kiln firing\, lead by professor Trisha Kyner of CCBC\, with origins in the Baltic region of Eastern Europe.  Both ceramic firing processes are thrilling and involve pulling clay vessels from a 1650°F kiln and then quickly plunging them into cooler materials that shock the glaze and create mesmerizing markings. \n\n\n\nTest your clay skills! Sign up to participate in the Clay Olympics\, multiple competitions and feats of strength that will take your clay skills to new heights – literally. Winners will earn handmade clay prizes. \n\n\n\nThroughout Fire Fest and the weekend\, guests can also experience Baltimore Clayworks’ Community Woodfiring of our Noborigama kiln\, the first urban Japanese ascending kiln operating in the Baltimore region. Wood Kiln Technician Jeremy Wallace will lead students from Towson University\, Community College of Baltimore County\, Anne Arundel Community College and Morgan State University through the two-day firing process. During this time\, the kiln must be fed wood\, day and night\, to reach 2300°F. Vessels take on a rich variety of colorful flashing and unpredictable glaze effects from either the wood ash or soda chamber. After a week of cooling\, pieces emerge with markings from their nights spent dancing with fire. \n\n\n\nProceeds from this event will ensure the continuation of the incredible artistic and educational programs housed at Baltimore Clayworks’ Mt. Washington studio and gallery and in locations around Baltimore City through our Community Arts program. Enjoy a fun-filled evening with friends and family and make a difference by supporting clay artists of all ages and abilities across the Baltimore region. \n\n\n\nTicket Information\n\n\n\n\n$20: Student tickets (with a valid Student ID)\n\n\n\n$40: Member Tickets\n\n\n\n$50: General Admission tickets\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Processes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObvara\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaku\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoborigama\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOktoberfest – Beer Steins and Wine Goblets Invitational\n\n\n\n\nRaise a toast to creativity!
