Summer Camps at Clayworks! 11 Weeks Ages 6-15

Join Baltimore Clayworks this summer for an exciting series of summer camps! In 2018 we will explore our planet’s diverse history, culture, and environments through clay. Campers will become masters of their craft, while exploring hand-building and potter’s wheel techniques to create their own inspired clay masterpieces. Check out the camp descriptions and schedule below — 11 weeks of full-day camps for children and half-day camps for teens. All camps run Monday through Friday. Class fees include all materials and firing.

Age Groups

For the Full Day Camps, campers will be separated into groups of these ages: 6-9, 10-12.

The Afternoon Teen camps are for ages 12-15.

FULL DAY Children’s Summer Camps: 9:00AM to 4:30PM (Drop off: 9AM to 9:10AM, Pick-Up: 4:30-4:40PM)

AFTERNOON Teen Summer Camps: 2:00PM to 5:00PM (Drop off: 2PM to 2:10PM, Pick-Up: 4:30-4:40PM)

Modern Ceramic Masters

During this exciting week, campers will be introduced to a variety of contemporary ceramic artists and learn about their techniques and reasons for making. From Picasso and Robert Arneson, to Patti Warishina and Bethany Krull, we will explore the many ways artists are using clay to make sculpture today. Using a wide assortment of hand-building techniques, including pinch, coil, slab, stamps, and more, campers will find inspiration in artists working today. Class includes all materials and firings.

Figurative Clay: Portraits, Puppets & Figurines

Figurative Clay: Portraits, Puppets, & Figurines

Learn about the timeless tradition of figure sculpture this week! In this class, we will explore the figure in clay by creating self portraits, marionette puppets, and figurines. Students will learn a variety of sculptural skills including slab, pinch, and coiling techniques to create all kinds of figures! Class includes all materials and firings.

Ancient Days: Tales of Greece

This week campers will travel to Ancient Greece! Our adventures will take us from the peaks of Mount Olympus to the steps of the Parthenon. Campers will learn all about storytelling in Ancient Greece, from its mythology to its historical figures and traditions. Campers will use a mixture of brainstorming techniques and group exercises to stretch their imagination and tell their own stories on Greek style sculptures.

Stories in Clay

Get ready for a clay-filled week of storybook excitement! Each day we will read a short story and learn about story-telling. Campers will then use their imagination to create their own characters and narratives, and bring them to life with clay! During each project, campers will learn the fundamental techniques of sculpting in clay through coil, pinch, and slab methods of hand-building. Class includes all materials and firings.

SC4a-b – Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-4:30PM, July 9 - 13

Everyday Clay: Handcrafted Culture

In this class, students will explore the many ways that ceramics plays a role in our daily lives. From kitchens to bathrooms, students will learn about the importance of clay in our homes. This class will focus on hand-building functional objects that students can use every day. Students will learn techniques to personalize their work, embracing their individuality and creating one-of-a-kind works of art.

Class includes all materials and firings.  

SC5a-b – Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-4:30PM, July 16 - 20

Under the Sea

This week, campers will be inspired by the Earth's beautiful marine environments and its inhabitants! Campers will learn about ocean life and use clay to hand-build their own colorful marine mammals, underwater plants, and more. From whales to seahorses, and coral reefs to kelp, students will explore the ocean's depths in clay! Class includes all materials and firing.

SC6a-b – Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-4:30PM, July 23 - 27

Safari Adventure

Lions, elephants, and zebra, oh my! Join us on an African safari where we will explore the savannas of the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara. Campers will learn all about the flora, fauna, and local cultures in these diverse regions. In the studio, we will use slab, coil, and pinch pot methods to create our favorite wildlife and their unique environments. Campers will also draw inspiration from cultural craft traditions like surface patterns and personal ornamentation.

Galactic Discoveries

This week we invite all astronomers, astronauts, and aliens to join us as we explore the galaxy! Campers will participate in a variety of studio projects where they will develop their own spaceships to navigate through the solar system and search for alien life! On our journey through space, we will engage in projects that explore the constellations and planets in our marvelous universe. Class includes all materials and firings.

Collaborations with Nature  

Get ready to explore outside! This week we will work with nature to create functional and sculptural pieces that incorporate textural elements using leaves, flowers, and more. Campers will learn fundamental hand-building skills such as pinch, coil, slab, stamping, and press molding. By bringing elements of nature into their work, campers will learn a new appreciation for the outdoors, while expanding their horizons, and embracing their unique creativity. Class includes all materials and firings.  

SC9a-b – Monday-Friday, 9:00AM-4:30PM, August 13 - 17

World Traditions in Clay

Join us as we traverse the globe and learn about its diverse regions and cultures! Each day we will visit a different country and learn about a unique cultural tradition. We will examine patterns unique to traditional Portuguese tile making, learn about Moche pottery from Peru, and be inspired by Shango Ritual Vessels of the Yoruba in West Africa! Campers will create various sculptures, paintings, drawings and more!

Class includes all materials and firings.

Menagerie: Real and Imagined Animals

Put on your imagination hats!  This week we will use a range of hand-building methods to create a real and imaginary animal menagerie! From land to sea, under the bed to inside the closet, and everywhere in between, students will tap into their creativity to make the animals of their dreams. Class includes all materials and firings.

AFTERNOON Teen Summer Camps (Ages 12-15)

Teen Potter's Wheel: Everyday Clay -- 5 sessions

In this class, students will explore the many ways that ceramics plays a role in our daily lives. From kitchens to bathrooms, students will learn about the importance of clay in our homes. This class focus on learning how to use the pottery wheel to create functional objects that students can use every day. Students will learn techniques to personalize their work, embracing their individuality and creating one-of-a-kind works of art. Class includes all materials and firings.

Teens in this funky camp will discover an explosion of color based on Pop Art! Campers will learn the fundamental techniques of throwing on the potter's wheel, such as centering, throwing, trimming and making handles, to create functional pots. We will explore the use of illustrations, text, and patterns with glazes and underglazes to create bold pieces of art.

Up Your Game: Sculpture for Teens

This week, teen campers will strategize, design, and build their own board games! Using slabs, coils, and other sculptural techniques, they will re-create classic designs and invent new games of their own. Students will use clay to engage their minds, use their hands, and have fun!
