SUMMARY:Community Arts Summer Showcase: Character Traits
DESCRIPTION:View the Exhibition Publication here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Community Arts Summer Showcase: Character Traits is a collaborative project between Baltimore Clayworks and the Maryland School for the Blind\, highlighting the intersection of artistic expression and social-emotional learning. Rooted in the Maryland School for the Blind’s Character Trait of the Month program\, this initiative emphasizes the development of values such as perseverance\, empathy\, patience\, and cooperation as essential components of student growth. \n\n\n\nThrough hands-on ceramic processes\, high school students translate these abstract traits into tangible\, sculptural forms. Each piece reflects an individual interpretation of character\, inviting viewers to consider how values can be embodied\, practiced\, and shared within a community. This exhibition celebrates not only the creative achievements of the Maryland School for the Blind students\, but also their commitment to personal development and community connection.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nClay from the Classroom\n\n\n\nClay from the Classroom is our annual exhibition celebrating the talent and triumphs of our students and their instructors\, featuring beginner through advanced ceramic art from our various classes from the past year. \n\n\n\nLormina Salter Fellow Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe Lormina Salter Fellow Exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks celebrates the work of the current Lormina Salter Fellow\, Brady Fanning\, honoring a year of dedicated studio practice\, research\, and artistic growth. \n\n\n\nEMBARC Fellow Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe EMBARC Fellow Exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks highlights the innovative work of the organization’s current EMBARC Fellow\, Katherine Pon-Cooper\, celebrating a year of artistic exploration\, research\, and creative growth.

SUMMARY:On My Best Behavior
DESCRIPTION:The EMBARC Fellow Exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks highlights the innovative work of the organization’s current EMBARC Fellow\, Katherine Pon-Cooper\, celebrating a year of artistic exploration\, research\, and creative growth.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView the Exhibition Publication here – Coming soon!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Show\n\n\n\nOn My Best Behavior documents an individual reflection on the experience of being a biracial Chinese American and a personal rejection of the “model minority” myth. Usonian symbols of the Stars and Stripes and baseballs address the expectation of nonwhite Americans to perform patriotism in exchange for tolerance\, to willingly participate in one’s own assimilation for the bare minimum of respect. Dogs represent obedience\, loyalty\, and submission– prescribed behaviors for the model minority to reassure white America that we are not a threat. Through a mixture of Chinese and American ceramic aesthetic languages and firing techniques\, On My Best Behavior manifests Chinese American artifacts\, and encourages expression outside the limits of the Model. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\n\nKatherine Pon-Cooper is an ceramic artist living and working in Baltimore\, MD\, who received her BFA in Ceramics at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2025. She was born and raised in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, and draws inspiration from the state’s tradition of folk pottery. Pon-Cooper works primarily in functional pottery\, using wheel-thrown forms and atmospheric firing to explore her mixed racial identity\, family history\, and clay as archive. Her work combines Chinese visual motifs with American folk pottery processes\, translating her personal biracial Chinese American experience into clay. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nAnomaly\n\n\n\nThe Lormina Salter Fellow Exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks celebrates the work of the current Lormina Salter Fellow\, Brady Fanning\, honoring a year of dedicated studio practice\, research\, and artistic growth. \n\n\n\nCommunity Arts Summer Showcase\n\n\n\nThe Community Arts Summer Showcase celebrates the creativity\, voices\, and shared experiences of our community.

SUMMARY:Anomaly
DESCRIPTION:The Lormina Salter Fellow Exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks celebrates the work of the current Lormina Salter Fellow\, Brady Fanning\, honoring a year of dedicated studio practice\, research\, and artistic growth.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView the Exhibition Publication here – Coming soon!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Show\n\n\n\nThis exhibition extends the body of work I developed just before receiving the Lormina Salter Fellowship. It presents sculptures that vary in scale and challenge traditional ideas of what ceramics are known to be. These forms feel ethereal and animated\, as if they possess an internal life\, while still functioning as objects of power and presence. Their sharp extensions\, layered ornamentation\, and complex silhouettes evoke transformation.  \n\n\n\nEach sculpture is constructed from multiple working components designed to function as modular\, independent parts. Like pieces of a puzzle\, these elements come together to form a unified object\, allowing the works to feel simultaneously fragmented and whole. This modular approach reflects my interest in systems\, growth\, and assembly.  \n\n\n\nAlongside the larger works\, I am also experimenting with smaller-scale objects that operate as companions—almost like siblings or offspring of the larger forms. These pieces echo similar shapes\, surfaces\, and gestures\, suggesting lineage\, evolution\, and the possibility of an expanding family of forms that play with the idea of what platform acts as a means of display or presentation. Together\, the works create a network of related objects that feel both autonomous and interconnected. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\n\nBrady Fanning is a ceramic artist from Fort Wayne\, Indiana. He is the 2025 Lormina Salter Fellow at Baltimore Clayworks\, where he is currently in residence. Brady graduated with his MFA from the Eskenazi School of Art\, Architecture + Design at Indiana University Bloomington and earned his BFA in ceramics from Purdue University Fort Wayne in 2021. With teaching experience in ceramics and 3D design\, Brady creates intricate sculptures that explore themes of power\, protection\, and desire. Brady has just been selected to be one of the 2026 emerging artists for Ceramics Monthly  \n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement\n\n\n\nThis work explores the tension between power\, protection\, and desire through hybrid ceramic sculptures that blend organic and synthetic forms. Influenced by ancient Greek vessels\, architecture\, and weaponry\, I create aggressive yet seductive forms with sharply curved extensions. Using wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques\, I construct complex structures and replicate elements with molds. Using layered underglazes and glossy/metallic finishes—evokes sci-fi aesthetics while fetishizing parts of the sculpture\, similar to how fashion and armor adorns the body. These sculptures engage themes of fetishism\, futurism\, and queer aesthetics— envisioning a world where traditional boundaries—whether of gender\, species\, or material—are dissolved. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nOn My Best Behavior\n\n\n\nThe EMBARC Fellow Exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks highlights the innovative work of the organization’s current EMBARC Fellow\, Katherine Pon-Cooper\, celebrating a year of artistic exploration\, research\, and creative growth. \n\n\n\nCommunity Arts Summer Showcase\n\n\n\nThe Community Arts Summer Showcase celebrates the creativity\, voices\, and shared experiences of our community.

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk with Wei-Yin Chen
DESCRIPTION:Tune into the Baltimore Clayworks Artist Talk series to learn more about our artists and the work they create!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for the Virtual Artist Talk here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCeramic artists are at the heart of Baltimore Clayworks. Artists are at the center of the mission of Baltimore Clayworks\, and provide the organization with talent and innovation to inspire our community and to enliven the artistic impact of ceramics in our region. Their professional and personal networks provide a kaleidoscope of interactions with peers\, galleries\, and academic institutions\, which keep the organization at the forefront of contemporary ceramic art. \n\n\n\nArtist Bio \n\n\n\nWei-Yin Chen’s ceramic practice centers on the hollow eyes of her clay figurines and the viewing relationships constructed through their gazes. By arranging linear sightlines\, she guides the viewer into a mode of looking that hovers between participation and exclusion. As a medium that shifts narrative perspectives\, the figurines mirror the artist’s inner states of escape and vulnerability. Their empty eyes not only respond to her sculptural training and considerations of ocular form\, but also translate the viewpoint of the weak under conditions of power imbalance. \n\n\n\nMotifs of girls and tears often transform “showing weakness” into an act of “resistance\,” while the cute\, cartoon-like visual language reveals the tragedy concealed beneath a sweet appearance. The technique of inflated modeling heightens emotional tension\, allowing cuteness to become a vessel for social alienation and rebellious energy. In addition\, the work actively explores cross-dimensional relationships between the two- and three-dimensional. Through the improvisational and fractured qualities of imagery\, it reconsiders the intertwined possibilities of image and space.

SUMMARY:Shino Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Juried by Matthew Hyleck\n\n\n\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, September 12\, 2026\, 4:00 – 6:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApply to this juried exhibition here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBaltimore Clayworks is pleased to present Shino Odyssey\, a juried exhibition celebrating the depth and diversity of Shino glazes. This exhibition invites artists to explore and showcase the vast possibilities of this glaze family known for its remarkable sensitivity to clay body\, application\, kiln atmosphere\, and firing duration. \n\n\n\nAbout the Juror\n\n\n\n\nMatthew Hyleck received a BFA from Xavier University in 1997. He is currently an associate artist and instructor at Baltimore Clayworks whose outstanding functional pottery has earned recognition by the Maryland State Arts Council IAA in Craft in 2018\, 2011\, 2007 and 2005 and has received recognition within the field of ceramics. His studio work was featured on the December 2011 Ceramics Monthly cover article. Additionally he has completed visiting artist-residencies at Tainan National University for the Arts\, Taiwan R.O.C.\, Ohio University’s Woodfire Symposium and Watershed Craft Center’s artists invite artists residency. He serves as the education coordinator for Baltimore Clayworks Mt. Washington campus\, a position he has held since October 2000. He maintains an active home studio in the Beverly Hills neighborhood of Baltimore City  \n\n\n\n\nJuror’s Statement\n\n\n\nI have worked with Shino glazes now for nearly 25 years – nearly half my lifetime and the entirety of my potting career – and still find the Shino glaze family provides a complex visual and textural breadth. These glazes remain highly sensitive to clay body\, application\, kiln atmosphere\, and duration of the firing which in turn allows for tremendous diversity with a touch of serendipity.  \n\n\n\nTraditional Japanese Shino glaze (16 th Century) contains a high concentration of feldspar which\, when fired\, produces a thick semi-transparent white glaze. with a semi-gloss surface when fired to approximately 1200°C. Contemporary American Shino glazes – while they have evolved over the last 50 years – remain rooted in this basic chemical formulation with feldspar\, soda ash and kaolin remaining central components of the glaze.  \n\n\n\nShino glazes are best detailed by their warm earthtone hues of cream and peach. They are at times temperamental\, ethereal\, sumptuous and tantalizing – a distillation and embodiment of our daily life\, experience and relationships.   \n\n\n\nI owe my potting career to those pioneering American potters who have informed my journey with Shino (such as Malcolm Davis and Warren MacKenzie)\, who have tested and re-tested\, fired and failed only to persevere in their pursuit of this glaze Shino and it’s myriad possibilities. This exhibit seeks to explore Shino works  that best illustrate the depth\, range\, and variations possible with Shino glazes.   \n\n\n\nMatt Hyleck \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nSolo Exhibition by Ali Saunders\n\n\n\nMore information coming soon! \n\n\n\nNew Kids On The Block 2026\n\n\n\nIncoming Fellowship and Resident Artist Showcase \n\n\n\nOktoberfest\n\n\n\nBeer Stein and Wine Goblet Invitational \n\n\n\nCommunity Arts Fall Showcase\n\n\n\nCelebrate the creativity of our community at the Community Arts Fall Showcase

SUMMARY:Fire Fest 2026
DESCRIPTION:Fire\, both seductive and wild\, is essential in creating ceramic wares. Join the Baltimore Clayworks community for the unexpected during our expedition of firing techniques from around the world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets – Coming Soon!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Information\n\n\n\nWatch live demonstrations! Experience Raku kiln firings\, with origins tracing back to China and Japan\, and an Obvara kiln firing\, lead by professor Trisha Kyner of CCBC\, with origins in the Baltic region of Eastern Europe.  Both ceramic firing processes are thrilling and involve pulling clay vessels from a 1650°F kiln and then quickly plunging them into cooler materials that shock the glaze and create mesmerizing markings. \n\n\n\nTest your clay skills! Sign up to participate in the Clay Olympics\, multiple competitions and feats of strength that will take your clay skills to new heights – literally. Winners will earn handmade clay prizes. \n\n\n\nThroughout Fire Fest and the weekend\, guests can also experience Baltimore Clayworks’ Community Woodfiring of our Noborigama kiln\, the first urban Japanese ascending kiln operating in the Baltimore region. Wood Kiln Technician Jeremy Wallace will lead students from Towson University\, Community College of Baltimore County\, Anne Arundel Community College and Morgan State University through the two-day firing process. During this time\, the kiln must be fed wood\, day and night\, to reach 2300°F. Vessels take on a rich variety of colorful flashing and unpredictable glaze effects from either the wood ash or soda chamber. After a week of cooling\, pieces emerge with markings from their nights spent dancing with fire. \n\n\n\nProceeds from this event will ensure the continuation of the incredible artistic and educational programs housed at Baltimore Clayworks’ Mt. Washington studio and gallery and in locations around Baltimore City through our Community Arts program. Enjoy a fun-filled evening with friends and family and make a difference by supporting clay artists of all ages and abilities across the Baltimore region. \n\n\n\nTicket Information\n\n\n\n\n$20: Student tickets (with a valid Student ID)\n\n\n\n$40: Member Tickets\n\n\n\n$50: General Admission tickets\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Processes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObvara\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaku\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoborigama\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOktoberfest – Beer Steins and Wine Goblets Invitational\n\n\n\n\nRaise a toast to creativity! SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Workshop: "Form\, Line\, Transpire\, Refine" with Noel Bailey
DESCRIPTION:Register for the Visiting Artist Workshop here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModest thrown forms make an excellent foundation for a variety of hand building methods. Coil-and-pinch additions\, carving and darting subtractions\, ovaling\, ribbing\, scraping\, handle making – all are techniques we’ll use to make pots that transcend the symmetrical limitations of the wheel in this 2-day\, hands-on workshop. With these methods\, we’ll explore how foot and lip alterations define and elevate the character of basic forms. Further investigations of rhythm\, movement\, and composition will be made through the use of line – from subtle surface cuts\, to form altering molded impression stamps. As we guide design decisions through a framework of function\, we will employ personal aesthetics and discover spontaneity and ideas through making. \n\n\n\nTools to bring: \n\n\n\n\nYour standard handbuilding kit with your name on every tool.\n\n\n\nGood quality knife with a thin\, narrow blade\, shorter than 3″\, that comes to a point and is fairly sharp. (Exacto\, Dolan\, a kitchen paring knife)\n\n\n\nFlexible metal rib(s)\n\n\n\nSureform/shredder\n\n\n\nOptional: Hax tool from Sherrill Mud Tools\n\n\n\nOptional: 4 cylindrical pieces\, about mug size\, (thrown with 1 to 1.5 lbs of clay) at the leather soft (nearly ready to trim stage).\n\n\n\n\nThere will be a break for lunch both days. Feel free to bring your own lunch or visit one of the many restaurants within walking distance. \n\n\n\nIf you are curious about Noel Bailey’s workshop but haven’t decided whether or not to sign up you may consider attending his Virtual Artist Talk on Tuesday\, October 6\, from 12:30 – 1:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\n\n\n\nNoel Bailey is a potter\, teacher\, and student – raising\, working\, practicing\, and playing in Vermont’s Mad River Valley.   \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Southwest Colorado\, Noel is enchanted by vibrant landscapes through the continual pursuit of gorgeous lines and hydrologic idiosyncrasies. He has a M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Northern Colorado. SUMMARY:NCECA’s 61st conference\, "Charm"
DESCRIPTION:NCECA’s 61st conference\, Charm\, takes place in Baltimore\, Maryland\, March 10 – 13\, 2027Baltimore Convention Center1 W Pratt St\, Baltimore\, Maryland\, 21201 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the NCECA website for the latest updates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick to download the 2027 Opportunities Deadlines PDF\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for the 2027 Charm Conference opens in Fall 2026. \n\n\n\nCharm\, the 61st annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) takes place from March 10–13\, 2027. Your research\, creativity\, and knowledge can be shared with thousands of clay enthusiasts from throughout the U.S. and worldwide to learn from one another\, investigate\, and grow. The diverse qualities of Baltimore’s historic neighborhoods\, the energy of its enterprising harbor\, varied natural features\, and the warmth of its people give rise to the identity of The Charm City. \n\n\n\nThe etymological roots of charm are connected to the Latin word carmen\, meaning song or incantation. In modern usage\, charm can be a quality\, object\, or action\, and can function as an embellishment or a spell of transformation. Charm occupies a liminal space that resonates within the tactile materiality and elemental energy essential to ceramic art. Chance and intention\, mysticism and meaning are the call and response in ceramic art’s ancient and ever-evolving song of alchemical invention.  \n\n\n\nAcross cultures and centuries\, people have shaped earth and fire into forms of utility\, beauty\, and expression. Ceramic art has the power to make everyday life extraordinary. As we gather in Baltimore\, a city of resilience and creative spirit\, we invite you to consider how your work in clay enchants the world around you. Share your voice and vision in this celebration of ceramic arts – where tradition meets transformation\, and material becomes meaning.
