SUMMARY:Shared Offerings
DESCRIPTION:View the Exhibition Publication here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShared Offerings\, a solo exhibition by Ali Saunders\, 2024-27 Long-Term Resident Artist\, is about the parallels in relationships between objects and people. The show will feature objects exhibited in sets\, pairs\, and groupings that suggest connection and invite the viewer to observe familial links.  The patterns on the vessels are representations of the exchange between mother and child and the ways images can be holders of emotion\, conversation\, and legacy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\n\nAli Saunders is a ceramic artist from Boerne\, Texas who makes functional pottery using pattern and color. She received her Bachelors of Arts from the University of St. Thomas and her Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University. After graduating from the University of St. Thomas she was a resident at Flower City Arts Center in Rochester\, New York. Most recently\, she has been the Salad Days Resident at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts where she made 450 plates to be a part of the Salad Days event in July 2023. Saunders is inspired by the growth and abundance in nature and makes work that connects to legacy of female makers in her family. \n\n\n\n\nArtists Statement\n\n\n\nI make ceramic vessels that are functional and visually appealing. I enjoy the idea of crafting an object that has the potential to be equally pleasant in use or viewed sitting on a shelf. This duality\, of function and appearance\, is highly intriguing to me. The objects I produce function well\, but my commitment to the surface makes these objects more compelling. It is in the surface that a part of me is revealed and it is in the surface I hope the user finds solace and comfort.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit Ali Saunder’s website here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nShino Odyssey\n\n\n\nA juried exhibition celebrating the depth and diversity of Shino glazes. \n\n\n\nNew Kids On The Block 2026\n\n\n\nIncoming Fellowship Artists Show \n\n\n\nOktoberfest\n\n\n\nBeer Stein and Wine Goblet Invitational \n\n\n\nCommunity Arts Fall Showcase\n\n\n\nCelebrate the creativity of our community at the Community Arts Fall Showcase

He earned his BFA from Xavier University\, where he developed the foundation of his material practice and his interest in utilitarian form. \n\n\n\nHe has been part of Baltimore Clayworks for more than two decades\, contributing as an instructor\, mentor\, and community builder. His teaching emphasizes strong foundational skills\, material curiosity\, and the value of repetition in developing an authentic personal voice. \n\n\n\nMatt maintains an active studio practice alongside his leadership role at Baltimore Clayworks\, supporting artists\, students\, and community partners through thoughtful stewardship and mission‑driven collaboration. Outside the studio\, he enjoys hiking Maryland’s trails and reading. \n\n\n\n\nJuror’s Statement\n\n\n\nI am honored to support Baltimore Clayworks in the presentation of Shino Odyssey\, a juried exhibition celebrating the depth and diversity of Shino glazes. As I approached this exhibition\, my goal was to showcase the breadth of American Shino glaze family known for its remarkable sensitivity to clay body\, application\, kiln atmosphere\, and firing duration. This exhibition provides a glimpse into the nuance that reflects contemporary American Shino glaze. \n\n\n\nTraditional Japanese Shino is thought to have originated 400-500 years ago as a glaze composed almost entirely of pure local feldspar with the addition of small amounts of silica rich ash\, clay and salt – the resulting glaze characteristics provide a thick white sheen. \n\n\n\nAmerican Shino was developed in the 1970’s by Virginia Wirt\, a student working with Warren MacKenzie. The glaze evolved through the years to include Carbon Trap recipes ubiquitous to every ceramic studio – notably Malcolm Davis Shino. Carbon Trapping glazes contain a quantity of soda ash. This soluble material melts early in the firing (800 C / 1470 F). During the drying phase of the glaze application\, sodium crystals may develop on the glaze skin resulting in extraordinary patterns. Resist methods\, such as wax or tape masking\, may be employed to control these crystal growths. \n\n\n\nUltimately the humidity and drying time of the glaze\, placement of pots in the kiln and cycle of reduction serve key roles determining the range of carbon spotting\, haloing and lining which can appear. The orange to white complexion\, red and pink colorations of the main body of the glaze also responds to the iron content of the clay and glaze. The clay body on which the glazes are applied greatly effects the glaze finish. This is a glaze of subtle beauty and striking one-of-one results. This exhibition stands as a testament to all past and present masters who shared glaze recipes which have help to shape each and every one of us. \n\n\n\nMatt Hyleck \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso on Exhibition\n\n\n\nShared Offerings\n\n\n\nA solo exhibition by Ali Saunders\, 2024-27 Long-term Resident Artist\, about the parallels in relationships between objects and people. SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Workshop: "Form\, Line\, Transpire\, Refine" with Noel Bailey
DESCRIPTION:Register for the Visiting Artist Workshop here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModest thrown forms make an excellent foundation for a variety of hand building methods. Coil-and-pinch additions\, carving and darting subtractions\, ovaling\, ribbing\, scraping\, handle making – all are techniques we’ll use to make pots that transcend the symmetrical limitations of the wheel in this 2-day\, hands-on workshop. With these methods\, we’ll explore how foot and lip alterations define and elevate the character of basic forms. Further investigations of rhythm\, movement\, and composition will be made through the use of line – from subtle surface cuts\, to form altering molded impression stamps. As we guide design decisions through a framework of function\, we will employ personal aesthetics and discover spontaneity and ideas through making. \n\n\n\nTools to bring: \n\n\n\n\nYour standard handbuilding kit with your name on every tool.\n\n\n\nGood quality knife with a thin\, narrow blade\, shorter than 3″\, that comes to a point and is fairly sharp. (Exacto\, Dolan\, a kitchen paring knife)\n\n\n\nFlexible metal rib(s)\n\n\n\nSureform/shredder\n\n\n\nOptional: Hax tool from Sherrill Mud Tools\n\n\n\nOptional: 4 cylindrical pieces\, about mug size\, (thrown with 1 to 1.5 lbs of clay) at the leather soft (nearly ready to trim stage).\n\n\n\n\nThere will be a break for lunch both days. Feel free to bring your own lunch or visit one of the many restaurants within walking distance. \n\n\n\nIf you are curious about Noel Bailey’s workshop but haven’t decided whether or not to sign up you may consider attending his Virtual Artist Talk on Tuesday\, October 6\, from 12:30 – 1:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\n\n\n\nNoel Bailey is a potter\, teacher\, and student – raising\, working\, practicing\, and playing in Vermont’s Mad River Valley.   \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Southwest Colorado\, Noel is enchanted by vibrant landscapes through the continual pursuit of gorgeous lines and hydrologic idiosyncrasies. He has a M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Northern Colorado. He spent 4 summers with renowned makers and workshop presenters at Laloba Ranch Clay Center in Steamboat Springs\, Colorado. A hometown apprenticeship with Potter Bill Wilson and a rad high school clay program fostered an indelible love of the pursuit of ceramics.

Deutsch Foundation. \n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement \n\n\n\n“The essence of my art deals with the use of clay and steel to create sculptural forms and vessels. I am attracted to the precision of man and machine made steel objects and the manner in which clay can be manipulated to simulate such forms. The simulation of such forms with clay\, the experimentation of various finishes\, and steel and clay combinations are factors that I investigate. I have been creating with clay and steel for the past forty years. The inherent qualities of both media fascinate me. In clay\, it’s the plastic quality that allows it to be modeled into a wide range of forms. I take advantage of its plasticity and its ability to be transformed into whatever form I want. I model some pieces to simulate steel while I manipulate others to show its fragility. In steel\, it’s the strength\, the immediacy\, and the process that captivates me.” – Vicente Garcia

SUMMARY:NCECA’s 61st conference\, "Charm"
DESCRIPTION:NCECA’s 61st conference\, Charm\, takes place in Baltimore\, Maryland\, March 10 – 13\, 2027Baltimore Convention Center1 W Pratt St\, Baltimore\, Maryland\, 21201 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the NCECA website for the latest updates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick to download the 2027 Opportunities Deadlines PDF\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for the 2027 Charm Conference opens in Fall 2026. \n\n\n\nCharm\, the 61st annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) takes place from March 10–13\, 2027. Your research\, creativity\, and knowledge can be shared with thousands of clay enthusiasts from throughout the U.S. and worldwide to learn from one another\, investigate\, and grow. The diverse qualities of Baltimore’s historic neighborhoods\, the energy of its enterprising harbor\, varied natural features\, and the warmth of its people give rise to the identity of The Charm City. \n\n\n\nThe etymological roots of charm are connected to the Latin word carmen\, meaning song or incantation. In modern usage\, charm can be a quality\, object\, or action\, and can function as an embellishment or a spell of transformation. Charm occupies a liminal space that resonates within the tactile materiality and elemental energy essential to ceramic art. Chance and intention\, mysticism and meaning are the call and response in ceramic art’s ancient and ever-evolving song of alchemical invention.  \n\n\n\nAcross cultures and centuries\, people have shaped earth and fire into forms of utility\, beauty\, and expression. Ceramic art has the power to make everyday life extraordinary. As we gather in Baltimore\, a city of resilience and creative spirit\, we invite you to consider how your work in clay enchants the world around you. Share your voice and vision in this celebration of ceramic arts – where tradition meets transformation\, and material becomes meaning.
