Ceramic Sutra

Baltimore, Maryland – November 18, 2011– Baltimore Clayworks is proud to be presenting Ceramic Sutra, a book-themed exhibition of ceramic sculpture and installation juried by Novie Trump. This exhibition runs January 14th – February 26th,  2012 with an opening reception on Saturday, January 14th, from 6 to 8 pm. Admission is free.

Juror’s Statement
The books we read inspire us as artists, they infiltrate and infuse our world and the stories we tell. In art the concept of the book can serve as the object, the decorative motif and be used as the narrative foundation. Books can influence the aesthetics of a work, becoming the visual metaphor or stage for our own stories to unfold.
Artist books in the contemporary art world expand on the traditional notion of what makes a book a book. Is it the form: a spine with two covers holding pages within? Is it the presence of words, written on paper pages? Is it merely the conveyance of an idea?  Artists are invited to interpret, redefine and/or challenge the definition of the book for this exhibition.
