Sculpting Youth: Pimlico Road Satellite Studio Saturday Classes for Young People
January 9-January 30, 2010

Baltimore Clayworks and the community institutions with which we work have consistently demonstrated that well-designed, sustained and supervised arts programs truly make a difference in the lives of youth. Engagement in the creative process is proven to stimulate desire to learn, participate in the community, and build self-esteem. Working in clay, and art making altogether, requires patience, self-discipline and commitment. It strengthens problem solving skills as the maker must plan forms in three dimensions and create and attach separate parts using care and skill.

At Baltimore Clayworks Pimlico Road community satellite site, youth aged 10 to13 years old created movable sculpture with many ceramic parts using hand building techniques to express their ideas and loved ones in clay in the class “Sculpt the Muse” under teacher Melissa Harrison. In “Funky to Functional,” a class taught by Courtney Gover, students aged 6 to 9 years old built animal totem poles for their final project, pushing their ability to think creatively and technically.
